Officers found the bodies of 37-year-old Mark Tyler and a woman, thought to be his 79-year-old mother Maureen, in Pitsea View Road in Crays Hill on Monday.

Provisional post-mortem examination results show both died of gunshot wounds.

Police confirmed it is believed Mr Tyler shot his mother before taking his own life.

However, Det Ch Insp Lucy Robinson said the exact time of their deaths remained unclear.

They said Ms Tyler's death "is being treated as murder" and her son's death "non-suspicious".

Mr Tyler has been formally identified. Although the formal identification procedure has not yet been carried out on the woman, police have said they believe she is Mr Tyler's mother.

Det Ch Insp Robinson said: "Enquiries are ongoing in order to ascertain the sequence of events which led to their respective deaths.

"With this in mind, we're looking to speak with anyone who has been along Pitsea View Road, Gardiners Lane North or the surrounding area since the end of August or the first week of September."

Police said they were not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident.

Police were called to the bungalow in Crays Hill after concerns were voiced for the welfare of the occupants who had not been seen for several days.
