Court Restrains Jonathan From Renaming UNILAG

University of Lagos may retain its name – UNILAG afterall, as a Federal High Court in Lagos granted an interim order restraining the Federal Government from renaming the school as Moshood Abiola University on Monday.

Justice Stephen Adah granted this order in favor of the alumni association of the university who brought the case to court. He advised them to harmonize all suits on the matter into one case and then adjourned further hearing till July 4.

On Democracy Day, May 29, President Goodluck Jonathan had announced the renaming of the university after the late businessman cum politician, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, who won the annulled June 12, 1993 election. MKO died in government custody after he tried to validate his mandate.

The renaming of the university after him however provoked widespread condemnation and protests, including no fewer than three court cases.

Speaking on the matter on Sunday night, Mr. Jonathan said he followed the right procedure in renaming the university before seeking the endorsement of the National Assembly.
