Man Kills Friend For Not Attending Child Naming Ceremony

A 25-year-old man, Adeyinka Adetayo, on Monday was arraigned before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stabbing his friend to death. He faces a one count charge of murder.

The accused allegedly killed Elegbede Oriyomi, his friend, in a fight following a quarrel over the failure of the deceased to attend a party thrown to celebrate the naming of Mr. Adetayo’s child.

At the hearing, Police prosecutor, Banji Sangotokun, informed the court that the offence occurred on June 21, 2012 at about 4.00pm at Oke-Ilewo Area in the Abeokuta Metropolis.

The prosecutor said the deceased until his death was a serving officer with Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NSDSC) while the accused has no source of livelihood.

He further told the court that the accused was angry that the deceased did not attend his son’s naming ceremony and while he gave his reasons, heated arguments broke out between the two men.

According to the prosecutor the accused stabbed his friend on his hand and ear with a broken bottle. Mr. Oriyomi died in the hospital he was rushed to after the fight.

The prosecutor further told the court that the accused was arrested by police at the hospital.

He argued that the alleged offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun, 2006.

The accused who was represented by Adeniyi Olusegun did not take his plea before the court.

The Chief Magistrate, Olubola Ayobolu, adjourned the case till August 27, 2012 for further hearing while awaiting reports of the case from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP). The judge ordered the accused to be remanded in prison.
