Lagos State Govt Restricts Use Of Facebook, Twitter

With the new development, staff cannot connect facebook, twitter, Badoo and other social media while connected to the government internet server, except for Yahoo and Google.

Lagos State Government has restricted the use of social media with the government internet server within the State Secretariat, Alausa.

A staff who lamented the situation said they only got to know about it after trying for several hours to connect to Facebook account on Monday.

“At first I thought my accounts had been hacked as it sprung up a page with the inscription “Lagos State Internet User Portal” asking for a username and password to log in to access social media.

He said the government decision to shut down the social network may be fueled by the attitude of some staff who spend the whole day browsing through social networks rather than carry out their official duties.

“Some staff used the office computer systems to chat on Facebook, twitter rather than doing their jobs when they come to work. Some come as early as 7am just to come and access their Facebook and chat with friends”, the staff said.

But another staff said the decision will not stop staff from accessing social networks as “Most of the staff have blackberry phones, i-pads and even some Nokia phone that can access Facebook and others. Only a few access social media through office gadgets”.

“Besides, it is only for computers using the wireless internet provider in the secretariat, if you have your own internet modem, you can still access social media”.
